Deborah A.P. Hersman is non-executive chair of the board of ONE Gas, Inc. Ms. Hersman has been a director of ONE Gas, Inc. since 2023. Since 2019, Ms. Hersman has served on the board of directors of NiSource Inc., an electric and gas utility. In 2026, Ms. Hersman joined the board of directors of Lyft Inc.
Ms. Hersman served as Chief Safety Officer and advisor at Waymo LLC, the self-driving car technology subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. from January 2019 to December 2020. From 2014 to 2019 she served as President and CEO of the National Safety Council, America’s foremost nonprofit safety advocate focused on eliminating preventable deaths at work, in homes and communities, and on the road through leadership, research, education and advocacy. From 2004 to 2014, Ms. Hersman served as a board member and from 2009-2014 as chair of the National Transportation Safety Board (“NTSB”), which is internationally recognized for investigations across all modes of transportation. She was appointed to her roles at the NTSB by Presidents Bush (2004) and Obama (2009, 2011, 2013) and unanimously confirmed by the Senate four times. Ms. Hersman has experience working on transportation issues in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, contributing to milestone legislation such as the Transportation Equity Act of the 21st Century, the Pipeline Safety Improvement Act and the Motor Carrier Safety Improvement Act, which created a new modal administration at the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Ms. Hersman’s qualifications to serve on our Board of Directors include her extensive environmental and safety, operations, technology/security, regulatory compliance, executive leadership skills, public advocacy, and current and previous directorships.
Ms. Hersman earned a B.A. in political science and in international studies from Virginia Tech, and an M.S. in conflict analysis and resolution from George Mason University.
